Do-it-yourself brick cesspool

If your country house is located far from the centralized sewerage system, you need to take care of its autonomous organization. A simple solution to this issue would be to make a cesspool out of bricks. Its design is quite simple. Even if you do not have enough construction experience, after reading this article and delving into the material, you can do the work yourself. Before you make a cesspool out of bricks with your own hands, let's talk about choosing the right place and calculating its volume.

Where to install

  1. Data will be required on the number of people in the house living on a permanent basis. According to the average calculation, one person consumes 180 liters of water per day. If there are three people in your family, then the water consumption per month will be 12 m 3. This means that the cesspool should not be made less than 18 m 3, otherwise it will often have to be pumped out.
  2. The size of the pit will also be affected by the type of underlying rocks. For example, if the predominant rock near the cesspool is marl, then the volume of the pit will be able to accept up to 40% of the effluent consumed per month. But if clay is the predominant soil, then the volume of the pit should be done with a margin, because clay has a weak throughput.
  3. Distance to the surface in a filled hole. The ideal distance to the soil surface should be at least one meter. If this is not observed, then with a constant excess of the level of effluents in the pit, unpleasant odors may appear.
  4. Pit depth. Even if you decide to make a pit of brick without a bottom, sooner or later you will still have to call for sewers. Therefore, its depth should be no more than three meters in order for pumping to be carried out most efficiently. And if the pit has a concrete bottom, then you will have to call such a machine several times a month.

Necessary tools and materials

To fully begin construction, you must first prepare all the necessary building material and tools. So, you will need:

  1. silicate brick.
  2. Cement.
  3. Sand.
  4. Crushed stone or gravel.
  5. Fittings.
  6. Shovel.
  7. Ropes and pegs.
  8. Roulette.
  9. Ladder.
  10. Bucket.
  11. Level.
  12. Masterok and others.

Absorption Pit

The peculiarity of such a pit is the complete absence of a bottom. Accordingly, the drains go through a process of coarse filtration through a small layer of gravel, sand, crushed stone or just broken bricks. Then they fall into the ground. This version of the cesspool can rightfully be called economical. Even if you do not have much experience in performing construction work, here you can handle it yourself. Moreover, the savings lie in the fact that you will have to call a sewage truck a little less often, since part of the effluent will go into the soil. Especially this type of pit can be used in cases where it is planned to partially use it or a small amount of drains. For example, if there is no bathtub, jacuzzi, washing machines in the country house, then there will be much less drains.

Note! This type of cesspool must be built in the appropriate place. It should be located at a sufficient distance from water sources.

Cesspool without a bottom

This design is quite simple. Its walls are laid out with bricks, although gas silicate blocks or concrete rings can sometimes be used. So here is the workflow.

  • Based on the calculations for the volume of the cesspool, you dig a pit.
  • Lay out a brick in a checkerboard pattern. In this case, use a cement mortar.
  • To support the bricks, before laying, make a small screed or mini-foundation.
  • When the walls are ready, fill the bottom evenly with a mixture of sand, gravel, crushed stone or broken bricks. This will be a kind of drainage.
  • This mixture is also recommended, if possible, to fill the septic tank from the outside. Before this, the cesspool is waterproofed. This will prevent the penetration of untreated effluents into the soil.
  • After that, it remains to build a ceiling. If you have the opportunity, then you can buy ready-made, made of concrete. If not, then the ceiling can be built independently. To do this, a frame is made of bars and boards, reinforcement for the bundle is evenly laid out and poured with a ready-mixed concrete.
  • At the end, you need to make a hole for ventilation and install a ventilation pipe.

Here in this sequence a cesspool is made of bricks without a bottom - absorbing. In principle, you should not experience any special difficulties.

A cesspool with a bottom is made according to the principle of the technology described above. Only the screed is poured first. For this, a sand cushion 150 mm thick is made, reinforcement is laid, after which it is necessary to pour the same amount of concrete. When the concrete has hardened, another layer of screed up to 40 mm is poured on top. In this case, the mixture will be only sand and cement. There is a simplified version of how to make the bottom of the pit. To do this, you can buy a ready-made concrete floor, as in the case of a cover.
