How to make a sofa book with your own hands

To create a sofa-book, first of all, you need to make wooden frames: a seat, a back, a box for linen and armrests.

Let's start with the simplest thing - the laundry drawer. For this we need:

  • 2 boards 25 mm thick (40 mm thick or 20 mm plywood), 1900 mm long and 200 mm wide;
  • 2 boards 800 mm long and 200 mm wide;
  • 2 boards 25 mm 50 mm wide and 800 mm long;
  • 4 beams 40 × 50 (50 × 50) 200 mm long.

We collect the laundry box, as shown in the photo.

When the laundry box is ready, proceed to assembling the seat and backrest. Sizes may vary in width, but I recommend choosing them in such a way that the unfolded berth is as spacious as possible.

We assemble two identical frames with dimensions of 1890 × 650 mm from a bar of 40 × 60 mm using nails and self-tapping screws. Before hammering in nails, we drill the hole with a drill with a 3 mm drill. So that the frame from the bar does not come apart over time, after the nails have been hammered, we screw 89D screws at the joints. In order to screw in the self-tapping screws, we drill a hole for them first with a 3mm drill, and then with an 8mm drill to a depth of 10 mm.

After we have assembled two frames, we nail wooden slats on them, which will support the sofa mattress.

Now you can proceed to the manufacture of armrests. To do this, we need a board made of chipboard 25 mm thick, 50 mm wide and up to 1 m long. We cut out the walls for the armrests from fiberboard: two left and two right with the dimensions as indicated in the photo.

After we cut out the contours of the fiberboard armrests with a hacksaw on wood, we knock down a wooden frame for them.

Please note that the length of the timber frame must be 20 mm shorter than the fiberboard!

We make holes in the frame, as shown in the photo, using an 8.5 mm drill, and insert 8 × 120 mm bolts into them.

Sewing up the second side of the armrest.

Make holes on both sides of the laundry box with a 10 mm drill.

After we have finished assembling the frames, we connect all parts of the sofa into a single whole. We install special transformation mechanisms for the sofa-book, which can be easily purchased at any store of accessories for upholstered furniture. They should be installed in such a way that there is a gap of 10 mm between the seat and the backrest when unfolded, and when folded, the seat does not protrude beyond the armrests.

On request, the structure of the seat and backrest can be reinforced with wooden battens.
Now we sheathe the frame with foam rubber.

We nail non-woven fabric onto the lamellas. Put 60 mm thick foam rubber on top. We cut out pieces of foam rubber 50 × 95 mm in size under the mechanism, so that the foam rubber sheet freely lies on the frame.

On the edge of the seat, on top of the existing upholstery, we glue another strip of foam rubber 20 mm thick and 200 mm wide, in order to get a soft roller along the edge of the sofa.

After that, we glue 40 mm thick foam rubber on top, and fold the edge under the seat. We do the same with the back of the sofa, and pull the pre-sewn sofa covers over them.

It's time to tackle the armrests.

We make a 40 mm thick foam rubber roller on the armrest. At the beginning of the armrest, the foam rubber should have a width of about 150 mm, and by the middle it decreases to 50 mm and remains unchanged to the end.

On top of the armrest, we nail down foam rubber 20 mm thick and bend it onto a foam rubber roller. We cut off the excess.

We unfold the part with the bolts in our direction. We glue foam rubber with a thickness of 20 mm at the level of 320 mm from the lower edge of the armrest.

After the foam is stuck, we wrap the back part over the material that is already fixed. We nail it down and cut off the excess.

We turn the protruding edges of the foam rubber on the front of the armrest.

We cover the armrests with fabric. We nail the fittings to the front side.

The sofa can now be fully assembled.
