Fastening gutters - photo and video

There are several varieties of gutters, but they are all divided into two main types: plastic and metal. The rules for installing a drainage system are the same for products made of any material. Only the locking connections of the gutters differ. They can be collapsible with rubber seals or glued.

Gutter attachment points

It is necessary to fasten brackets for gutters at the stage of roof construction before laying the roofing. But this does not mean that if the house has already been built, then after that the drainage system cannot be installed.

There are 4 ways to install gutters:

  1. The application of the first method involves fastening the gutters directly to the frontal board. This choice is relevant for a building where installation is underway with a finished roof or plastic elements are selected as a drainage system. Fastening metal gutters to the frontal board is also allowed, only other hooks that are shorter in length must be used.
  2. Before laying the roof, fasteners can be fixed to the rafter legs. Although, it has its limitations. The distance between the rafters should not exceed 600 mm. This method is considered the most reliable and is suitable for a roof with a large area.
  3. Fastening to the roof sheathing with elongated hooks. They are fixed to the first bar. The application of the method is relevant before laying roofing on the roof with a truss system pitch of more than 600 mm. Often such a mount is chosen for ondulin or metal tiles.
  4. The fourth method is applicable if it is impossible to get to the rafters or lathing, that is, after laying the roofing and in the absence of a frontal board. Holes are drilled in the wall and metal pins are installed. Gutters are fixed directly to them with studs.

By choosing any suitable installation method, you can install the gutter system before and after laying the roofing.

We determine the step of fastening the brackets

The brackets will hold the gutters and all the main load will fall on them. The number of fasteners depends on the material of the gutters. Brackets are mounted under metal gutters with a pitch of 500–600 mm. Plastic drainage system should be fixed more often. Here it is recommended to install brackets every 300–350 mm. 3 fasteners should fall on 1 m of plastic drain.

On a complex roof, the number of turns must be taken into account. An additional bracket must be installed on each of them. All gutters are connected to funnels that provide water flow into the outlet pipes. From each funnel, no further than 150 mm, additional brackets are mounted.

Knowing the length of the roof and having decided on the mounting step of the fasteners, you can easily count all the brackets.

Why do you need a slope and how to withstand it?

The proper functioning of the drainage system is possible only with observance of the slope. All gutters after installation at a certain slope converge at the drainage pipes, where a water intake unit is installed - a funnel.

Failure to comply with the slope threatens the following consequences:

  1. A weak slope of the gutters will not ensure complete drainage of water into the pipes. The liquid will stagnate or overflow, and at a negative temperature it will simply freeze.
  2. A very large slope will create other problems. The diameter of the funnels and drainage pipes may not be able to cope with a large amount of water, and it will overflow over the side.

When buying all elements of the drainage system, they come with instructions that indicate the optimal slopes. Usually for plastic gutters they withstand 3-5 mm / 1 p.m. Similar requirements are imposed on metal counterparts - 2-5 mm / 1 p.m. When building a slope, it must be taken into account that the distance between the funnels should not be more than 24 m.

It is necessary to observe the smoothness of the slope to avoid drops. The brackets are attached first at the highest points. In this case, the lower points are obtained at the drain pipes near the funnels. After calculating the slope, taking into account the length of the entire gutter, mount the brackets at the lowest points. The uniformity of the intermediate fasteners is determined by the stretched cord between the extreme brackets.

Installation of gutters

Installation of the entire system starts from the intake funnel. It is mounted at the lowest point, and 20 mm below the design line. Particular attention should be paid to the protrusion of the eaves. It should not cover a third of the diameter of the gutter.

After installing the funnels, gutters are laid on the brackets. The connection of elements occurs depending on the features of their design. Plastic drains can be glued, but such fastening is non-separable, which is inconvenient during repairs. Collapsible locking joints on rubber seals are considered the most effective. In any case, the gutter cannot be glued to the funnel. It must be freely connected by a lock.

During installation, pay attention to the location of the brackets. They should not be closer than 100 mm to the locks. Shortening several drains with a hacksaw will help to withstand such parameters.

The complex shapes of roofs are characterized by a large presence of internal and external corners. To bypass them use additional accessories. At the end of the gutter, if there is no corner connection, plugs are installed.
