Plasterboard fireplace - decoration of any home

Previously, the fireplace in the house served only one purpose - heating the room. For the poor, it was simple, but for richer people, it has already become a full-fledged decoration and very often showed the status of its owner.

Now fireplaces are a very popular decorative element that can create the feeling that you are not in a simple city apartment, but in the hall of a chic mansion. It creates a warm and cozy atmosphere in the house, brings its own particular zest to each interior.
In hardware stores, you can now buy a ready-made electric fireplace. However, it will be much more pleasant to make a drywall fireplace with your own hands. It's simple enough. When using drywall, an almost complete imitation of a traditional wood-burning fireplace can be created.

In addition, the decision to create a drywall fireplace can be dictated from a purely practical side. Indeed, after repairs, pieces of drywall and a metal profile almost always remain in the house - they can be used to create a fireplace with your own hands. Below is a fairly detailed instruction on how to perform the work.

Beginning of work

Tools

Let's figure out how to make a drywall fireplace with your own hands. Before creating a fireplace, you need to clearly define its design, size and location in the room. It is necessary to sketch a rough sketch with an exact indication of all dimensions. Perhaps it will be a drywall corner fireplace, this option is especially good for small rooms.

To assemble a drywall fireplace, you will need the following materials and tools:

  • drywall;
  • metallic profile;
  • screws for metal;
  • drywall screws;
  • putty;
  • screwdriver;
  • Bulgarian;
  • metal scissors;
  • roulette;
  • building level;
  • pencil.

Preparatory work before installing the fireplace

When the sketch of the fireplace is ready, the place where it will be placed is precisely determined, then you need to put marks on the wall near which it will be installed. If you plan to assemble a corner fireplace from drywall, then the markings are made in the corner of the room.

The back of the frame is assembled and attached to the wall so that you can figure out how our fireplace will look.

Frame installation

Installation of the fireplace frame takes place in three stages:

  1. Measurement and marking of the necessary pieces of the profile.
  2. Their cutting.
  3. Connection of profiles into a single structure

After you have made sure that all the dimensions are correct, we proceed to create the frame of the future drywall fireplace. According to the dimensions taken from the sketch, the rest of the profile is cut and fastened with metal screws using a screwdriver.

In order to make the design of the fireplace more original, you can make a small arch at the top of the fireplace. It is made quite simply. Cuts must be made on one side of the SD-60 profile. Further, this profile is bent in the form of an arc and attached to the frame.

To give the structure rigidity, you need to use a lot of jumpers. The maximum distance between profiles should not exceed 30-40 cm.

If it is planned that the assembled drywall fireplace will be a reliable imitation of a wood-burning hearth, then it is necessary to bring in advance electrical cables of the required section to connect the backlight.

Sheathing a frame made of metal profiles with drywall

After the installation of metal profiles is completed, you can proceed to fixing drywall.

These works are carried out in several stages:

  1. We measure the dimensions on the frame with a tape measure.
  2. With a pencil, mark the desired size on drywall.
  3. Using a knife, cut out the appropriate pieces.
  4. We fasten the drywall to the frame with screws. The distance between the screws must be at least 8–10 cm.

Any drywall can be used: ordinary or waterproof - all that remains after the repair. It is better to use drywall for walls. You can also use the ceiling, but it, due to its smaller thickness (for the wall - 12 mm, at the ceiling - 9 mm) will be less durable.

It is better to make the frame separately first, and only then attach it to the wall.

It should not be forgotten that if the fireplace is located on one side at a close distance from the wall or even rests against it, then you must first attach drywall there and only then attach the structure to the main wall. If this is not done, then subsequently you will not have enough space to fit a screwdriver, and you will have to fix the drywall with a simple screwdriver, which is quite difficult.

For the rational use of drywall on the frame, you can install additional jumpers that will correspond to the size of the drywall pieces left after the repair.

Fireplace with plasterboard

High-quality finishing of the fireplace with drywall does not require any special skills. Anyone can do this job.

Plasterboard fireplace trim

If the fireplace will be puttied and painted in the future, then when mounting it on a frame from a profile, you must try to avoid uneven ends. In the future, this will facilitate the finishing work (see Do-it-yourself fireplace decoration).

After the frame has been sheathed with drywall, it is necessary to do the finishing work.

There are several ways to finish:

  1. Overlay with artificial stone or tile.
  2. To putty and paint.
  3. Cover with decorative film.

In the case of installing a heat source in the fireplace - an electric heating element, it is necessary to make thermal insulation before finishing work.

The inside of the fireplace, the firebox, is sheathed with sheets of magnesite. A foil is applied over this heat-insulating material, which will reflect all the heat and will not allow the inner walls of the fireplace to heat up unnecessarily.

If the fireplace will be finished with artificial stone or tiles, it is necessary to do the work according to the following scheme:

In addition, decorative plaster can be used to finish fireplaces. A layer of plaster is applied to the plasterboard sheets. Stones or bricks are formed on the plaster that has not yet hardened with a trowel or spatula.

To obtain the effect of natural stone, it is necessary to walk with a brush along the smooth edges that are obtained after the formation of the image. After the plaster dries and hardens, acrylic paint is applied to its surface.

If a plasterboard fireplace will be puttied with further painting or pasted over with a decorative film, then the work must be carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. First you also need apply a coat of primer.
  2. Further all seams are sealed.
  3. Puttying process going on. First, the starting putty is applied, which, after drying, is rubbed with sandpaper. Then the finishing putty is applied and rubbed again.
  4. Coloring in progress the entire surface of the fireplace.

In order for the ends of the fireplace to be even, it is necessary to use a perforated corner. For decoration, you can use baguettes and polyurethane stucco - this is a very successful imitation of traditional gypsum stucco.

fireplace decoration

After the finishing work, the final stage is carried out - decorating the fireplace. The easiest and most inexpensive way is to paste over with a decorative film. There is a wide choice of different textures of such films, repeating the pattern of marble or granite (see Decorative finishing of fireplaces).

Fireplace trimmed with moldings

Also, to decorate a plasterboard fireplace, you can use various decorative elements: columns made of gypsum, various moldings - original stucco made of polyurethane. The use of such elements allows you to give the fireplace a complete look.

On the top of the fireplace, you can install a beautiful countertop and use it as a shelf where you can put some interior items. If there are no heating elements inside the fireplace, a mirror can be installed there.

A fireplace will always be a wonderful decoration in any home. It gives the room solidity, brings a unique charm of aristocracy. The fireplace fits perfectly into any style of interior, perfectly emphasizes all the design features.

It is not difficult to assemble a decorative drywall fireplace with your own hands, and this design can also perform a practical function - to serve as an additional source of heat. It is enough to install an electric heating element there that imitates a natural flame - and you start to feel very good in the house on cold winter evenings.
